Onze kunstroute
Our art walk has been devised for you to explore our sculptures, paintings, and landscaping in a way that we hope will surprise and delight, enchant and intrigue. Of course, you may wish to discover our works in your own sequence, and that’s fine too. Follow the blue cobblestones along the route or simply refer to the map. You can start your journey anywhere along the blue cobblestones and follow the sequence to view the total of 15 pieces of art.

Although very individual in expression, all the works here are emblematic of values we cherish. From the conservation of our natural environment to the protection of our rich and layered heritage. From opening ourselves to new possibilities, innovation and ideas to being challenged by different ways of seeing. And as importantly, to celebrate artistic talent. A) Runner Duck
Our art walk begins near the historic 1773 Vergenoegd Löw Homestead with a sculpture by local artist Manuela Holzer, featuring an Indian Runner duck. This piece is symbolic of the estate’s regenerative, natural, and holistic approach to farming, blending art and ethos seamlessly. Holzer, a renowned South African sculptress, created this bronze work as part of her exploration of diverse media, setting the tone for the 15 highlights along the route.
From here, follow the cobblestones in a northerly direction towards the main parking area and the hotel reception, where you’ll encounter Homage to Löwenmensch by renowned sculptor Dylan Lewis.

B) Eerbetoon aan Löwenmensch SH 87 a
De originele paleolithische Löwenmensch (Leeuwenmens) werd gevonden in de Hohlenstein-Stadelgrot bij München, Duitsland. Deze fantastische dier-menshybride (daterend van 35.000 tot 41.000 jaar geleden) toont een mensachtig lichaam met de kop van een leeuw. Nadat Lewis de Löwenmensch had gezien, raakte hij geïnspireerd om zijn eigen versie te maken. De complexe sculptuur verbeeldt onze evolutie van dier naar bewuste mens. Het stelt vragen over de aard van onze vooruitgang en onze impact op andere wezens en de aarde zelf.
Vanaf de hotelreceptie loopt u in noordelijke richting over de geplaveide straatjes terug naar het punt waar u de parkeerplaats bent opgereden. Hier vindt u Beast with Two Backs IV Life Size van Dylan Lewis, een opvallend kunstwerk dat direct bij aankomst zichtbaar is en een sfeervolle voortzetting vormt van uw reis door onze zorgvuldig samengestelde kunstcollectie.
C) Beest met Twee Ruggen IV Levensgroot I SH 30 e
Een chthonisch werk vol onverhulde erotische uitbundigheid dat de soms anarchistische onderwereld van ons onbewuste viert, onze spontane sensuele impulsen en verlangens. We ontspringen allemaal aan de aarde en keren er ook weer naar terug, terwijl we ons verbinden, loskoppelen, opnieuw verbinden en onze weg door de wereld vinden.
Vanaf Beast with Two Backs IV Life Size volgt u de kasseien in westelijke richting naar de damwand, waar u Male Trans-Figure van Dylan Lewis zult ontdekken. Deze krachtige sculptuur, geplaatst tegen de achtergrond van de Tafelberg, nodigt uit tot reflectie tijdens uw tocht langs onze zorgvuldig samengestelde kunstroute.

D) MANNELIJKE TRANSFIGUUR I S278
De menselijke vorm verbergt zich, maar onthult zich tegelijkertijd. Hij kronkelt zich weg, maar vanuit sommige perspectieven laat hij zich ook zien. Het werk drukt een dualiteit uit – schuchterheid/terughoudendheid, maar ook kracht. Dit zijn eigenschappen die we allemaal bezitten in onze worsteling met de complexiteit van menselijke relaties.
Vanaf Male Trans-Figure loopt u in zuidelijke richting over de kinderkopjes naar het gebied erachter, waar de kapel zich bevindt. Daar vindt u de door inheemse planten aangelegde Brandes Garden.
E) Jan Brandes Garden
Brandes Garden, inspired by flora discovered and depicted by Dutch artist Jan Brandes during his visit here from 1786 to 1787. (The garden is currently under development and will be completed and planted by January 2025.)
On the southern side of the Valentina Chapel, you will find the Maze, a captivating installation designed by renowned artist Terry de Vries.

F) Het doolhof
Mazes have multiple paths which branch off, sometimes leading to blind alleys. To find the point at the centre and to exit is to solve a puzzle. May your walk be enriching, satisfying and fun. There are two paths that lead to the blessing well in the centre. Opened doors may reveal or obscure. To find the centre will require focus and patience, but the effort will feel immensely rewarding. When you walk the maze, follow the sound of water to find the centre. You may be confused, but if you listen closely, you will find the blessing well.
Next to the Maze is the Valentina Chapel. Inside the chapel, you’ll find a stunning triptych altarpiece (reproduction) by 16th-century German artist Hans Baldung Grien, a pupil of the legendary Albrecht Dürer. If the chapel is closed, please ask our staff to open it for you.

On the northern side of the chapel you’ll find the Labyrinth by Terry de Vries, an intricate installation designed to inspire contemplation and connection, seamlessly blending art and environment.

Ons middeleeuwse labyrint met 7 circuits
H) Labyrint
Ons labyrint in middeleeuwse stijl, bestaande uit zeven circuits, is zo geplaatst dat het middelpunt in lijn ligt met de Botmaskopberg in de verte. Zowel ons labyrint als ons doolhof in Vergenoegd Löw zijn het werk van de in Stellenbosch geboren Terry de Vries. Als toonaangevende expert op het gebied van labyrinten heeft ze er tot nu toe meer dan 300 gebouwd, sommige in de Kaapse Wijnlanden, maar ook vele elders in Zuid-Afrika en daarbuiten.
Ga vanuit het Labyrint in zuidelijke richting, met de dam aan je linkerhand, naar Amy's Eiland. Daar ontdek je Female Trans-Figure XXXI van Dylan Lewis, een elegant en suggestief werk dat je reis door onze kunstroute extra diepgang geeft.
I) Beest met twee ruggen maquette SH 79
De mythologische mens/paard-centaur, die een ontembare viriliteit uitstraalt, belichaamt de spanning en versmelting tussen de mensheid en haar omgeving. Mens, dier en de natuur zelf moeten voortdurend naar manieren zoeken om met elkaar in harmonie te leven. De spanning en kracht van het werk drukken de dualiteit uit tussen een wild, instinctief, oerinstinctief zelf en het getemde, rationele verstand.
Vanaf Beast with Two Backs loopt u verder om de dam heen in zuidoostelijke richting om de Male Trans-Figure van Dylan Lewis aan de overkant van de dam te vinden.

J) Man-Trans Figuur IX S360
Het naakte mannelijke lichaam is doordrenkt met een explosieve dierlijke energie die het conflict tussen ons wilde en getemde zelf symboliseert. Rituele dierenschedelmaskers verbergen en onthullen ons wilde zelf. Onze uitdaging is om deze tegengestelde krachten intuïtief en authentiek te beheersen.

Een sterke, gespierde rug is gebogen in gedachten, in gebrokenheid, of beide. Er bestaat een constante spanning tussen geïsoleerde onderwerping en waardige zelfredzaamheid, terwijl we ernaar streven een gevoel van eigenwaarde te ontwikkelen.
Ga Clara's Barn binnen om uw reis voort te zetten en Vergenoegd Farm (reproducties) van Jan Brandes te bewonderen, gemaakt tijdens zijn bezoek van 1786 tot 1787, naast een prachtige, met 24-karaats bladgoud vergulde versie van de Indische loopeend van Manuela Holzer. The Jan Brandes panoramas of the Vergenoegd farm proved invaluable to the recent architectural restoration team. He has also given us an insight into what people looked like and did at that time.

Hoewel ze de Indische loopeenden die in Vergenoegd Löw te zien zijn in brons heeft gemaakt (en één afgewerkt met 23-karaats bladgoud), werkt ze met diverse materialen. Haar huidige focus ligt grotendeels op de vrouwelijke vorm in wat ze "extreme toestanden van de menselijke psyche" noemt, waarbij ze het begrip van de innerlijke schaduw onderzoekt. Ze zegt dat ze "een missie heeft om de uitdagende toestanden van de menselijke psyche zichtbaar, herkenbaar en begrijpelijk te maken door middel van kunst."“
