At Vergenoegd Löw, time moves differently. Just outside Stellenbosch, where our vineyards stretch toward the Atlantic Ocean, lies a world of stillness, beauty, and timeless rhythm. Ours is a place where heritage, nature, and thoughtful design meet in quiet harmony. A refuge where everything feels connected.
Now, we’re entering a new era. Under the direction of our Executive Chef, Michelle Theron, we are reimagining the way we share food, wine, and hospitality. All guided by a philosophy of calm refinement and authentic connection.
Honest luxury by design
Since joining us in mid-2025, Michelle has been reshaping our culinary landscape. Not only through reinvention, but via a return to authenticity. Together, we’ve set out to create experiences rooted in simplicity, sustainability, and seasonality.
Here, each ingredient has a voice, and every dish reflects the stillness of our surroundings. The result is a gastronomy that feels elegant, soulful, and profoundly South African.
As Michelle often says, “It’s about harmony – between food and wine, people and place, luxury and simplicity. Everything begins with what we grow, raise, and create on the farm. It’s generosity without excess, and beauty without noise.”
With over two decades of experience in some of South Africa’s most respected kitchens, including Hazendal Wine Estate and Pierneef à La Motte, Michelle brings a distinctive creative vision and deep respect for the South African table. Her arrival marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for us, one that reflects both our timeless heritage and our modern spirit.

Restoring and reimagining an historic Stellenbosch estate
When new ownership took over Vergenoegd Löw in 2015, one of the first priorities was the careful restoration of our historic 18th century Cape Dutch buildings, which were declared a National Monument in 1974.
Once a collection of elegant yet time-worn 18th-century structures, they have since been meticulously revived under the guidance of heritage specialists.
Extensive research helped preserve our architectural integrity, including the remarkable paintings and sketches of Jan Brandes, a Dutch minister and artist who lived here between 1786 and 1787. His works, now held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, vividly capture what life on our farm once looked like.
The restoration revealed fascinating layers of history: Clara’s Barn, believed to be one of the first barns ever built at the Cape; Geuwels, with its twin side gables that once served as the original wine cellar; and the 1773 Homestead, our original family residence, now being lovingly restored as the beating heart of our hospitality.
Today, these interiors are being gently reimagined through a refined, contemporary lens – each space with its own identity and purpose, yet united by a shared aesthetic of natural textures, calm luxury, and timeless design.
Food rooted in place
Our culinary philosophy is inseparable from our land. Michelle’s food journey began on a family farm near Gansbaai, where she learned early that the best food is simple, honest, and made with care. Think along the lines of fresh bread, butter, milk straight from the cow, and vegetables picked that morning.
Those early experiences, combined with her experience in Michelin-starred kitchens in The Netherlands, have shaped a style that is both sophisticated and sincere.
At Vergenoegd Löw, she’s translating that sensibility into a uniquely South African expression. Food that honours heritage and innovation, the earth and the ocean, craft and comfort.
As she states, “If guests leave feeling nourished, inspired, and content, then we’ve succeeded. That’s the heart of my type of hospitality. Generous, beautiful simplicity.”
And for us, that sentiment resonates deeply. Everything we do flows from the land – the vineyards, the soil, the sea breeze – and we want each guest experience to feel completely natural and deeply restorative.

Our soon-to-launch reimagined hospitality experience
From December 2025, the 1773 Homestead will become the tranquil centrepiece for staying guests. A retreat of understated elegance where mornings begin with thoughtful breakfasts and afternoons unfold over Homestead Farm Tea or our lux Caviar & Cap Classique Tasting (both offerings launching in early 2026). Day visitors may pre-book these experiences by contacting the estate.
Geuwels, also open daily from December 2025, will become the heart of our wine and casual dining experience. It will feature immersive tasting journeys that showcase the sea-kissed character of our wines and a farm-to-table menu driven by seasonal produce. Here, guests will be invited to enjoy our Indigenous Food & Wine Experience, featuring seven wines, seven dishes, and seven stories celebrating South African resilience, resourcefulness, and terroir. Other offerings will include artisanal cheese and charcuterie plates and platters, and generous harvest-style family sharing tables on Sundays.
Finally, Clara’s Barn, our culinary flagship, will take luxury dining to a new level, launching later on in 2026. Here, guests will get to enjoy reimagined heritage, heirloom, and classic small dishes. Each one balanced, fresh, and original. Menus will change frequently to reflect the rhythm of the seasons, paired with curated wine flights drawn from our own cellars and neighbouring estates whose values align with ours.
As a true farm-to-table establishment, most of our ingredients come directly from our own regenerative, agroecological gardens – vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, fruit and pasture-raised livestock. What we cannot grow ourselves, we source from local, like-minded suppliers who share our values.
Together, these elements create a living expression of Cape hospitality, refined yet real, where guests feel both inspired and at home.

A place to pause and reconnect
For us, honest and quiet luxury is not about extravagance. It’s about intention, presence, and authenticity. It’s the feeling of walking into a space where every detail has been considered, and nothing shouts for attention.
At Vergenoegd Löw, we invite you to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the beauty of simplicity. Our hope is that every visit leaves you restored, inspired, and deeply connected to the land that makes this place so extraordinary.
The next chapter is only beginning, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
