THE MICHELANGELO STAMP OF APPROVAL

13 March 2024

Two wines from our Vergenoegd Löw Collection, the 2023 Vergenoegd Löw Sauvignon Blanc and 2021 Vergenoegd Löw Merlot, were declared gold medal winners by the judging panel of the 2023 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.

Since 1997, Michelangelo has provided South African producers the chance to have their wines evaluated and rated by respected, skilled experts from around the world. A one-of-a-kind competition platform in Africa, judges hail from five continents. They might have different cultural values that impact taste preferences but when good is good, it’s recognisable.

That’s why the Michelangelo golds earned by two of our wines mean so much to us. It tells us what the professionals think of our wines.

Crisp, fresh and vibrant, our award-winning Sauvignon Blanc is great for sipping but also works a treat with grilled fish, seafood and chicken, seasonal veggies and salads. Try it with goat’s cheese too. Stock up, now that we have this great offer. Buy 5 bottles and get the 6th on the house. Our compliments to you. That’s right. Just R550 a case! Click here to buy.

We wish we could have offered you our other Michelangelo gold medal winner, the 2021 Vergenoegd Löw Merlot, but once the news was out, it was snapped up. All of it. You could of course, try the 2022 vintage. This Merlot is just as juicy – generous crowd-pleaser with flavours of mulberries and spice. We’re loving the newer vintage with butterflied leg of lamb grilled in the oven or over an open flame, with grilled ostrich or with burgers. And the magic ingredient in all these dishes. Mushrooms. Our merlot loves mushrooms in all shapes or forms.

The tempo is less intense here on the farm, now the harvest is almost over. It won’t be long before the cold steps up and the vines begin their winter rest. Vines, like us, need to reset, replenish and absorb the goodness of the earth.

We are doing everything we can to restore the world around us. We place store by soil health and conservation and we’re a proud WWF Conservation Champion for our sustainability efforts.

When Prof Dr Dr Peter Löw bought the farm in 2015, he envisaged a mixed working farm, where heritage could be brought back to life with style. When you visit, you’ll see the Indian Runner ducks and Dexter cattle that enrich the soil and take care of some of the insects that might otherwise want to dine on the vines.

All the Cape Dutch heritage buildings have been faithfully restored but inventively repurposed with the emphasis on luxury. See what we mean when you stop over at the Homestead. Taste wine, enjoy afternoon tea and experience old-world charm combined with contemporary flair.

You can dine at one of two Bertus Basson conceived restaurants. Geuwels is a casual eatery that celebrates local heritage tastes. Clara’s Barn offers a reinvention of local, traditional flavours in a fine dining setting.
