Every process on our farm is designed to leave as light a footprint as possible. This starts with a deep respect for the land and every creature that calls it home. Our enthusiastic team of over 1600 Indian Runner Ducks forms part of a natural pest control solution integral to the quality of our wines and environmentally conscious principles such as; recycling, biodegradable and recyclable packaging, solar electricity, composting and low-water drip irrigation systems, amongst others, have earned us the honour of WWF Conservation Champion status, and IPW biodiversity certifications.

We care about our people as much as we do about the environment. As a proud member of the Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trade Association (WIETA), we are committed to creating a safe, supportive and uplifting working environment that enables our farm workers and surrounding communities to thrive.

At Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate, we’ve always been dedicated to great wine, innovation and environmentally friendly farming practices. So when it came to protecting our precious vineyards from pests, we asked: Is there a way to do it without harming the farm’s delicate ecosystem? Our enthusiastic flock of over 1600 Indian Runner Ducks forage in the vineyards, happily dining on snails and keeping our farm pest free, naturally.

We are one of Africa’s proud pioneers of a very unique, integrated pest management program, a practice we have been refining since 1984.

WINE FARMING WITH

PEOPLE AND NATURE IN MIND

Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate has invented and uses its own sustainability iconography which can be found on all our products.

Our world renowned

Indian Runner Ducks

We have always loved our ducks here at Vergenoegd, but we have decided to take it a step further and show people that we actually love ALL birds! Our ducks are a big part of why Vergenoegd Löw proudly carries a WWF biodiversity certification seal as well as being awarded Conservation Champion status.

Drip Irrigation

As part of our commitment to sustainability and to safe valuable amounts of water in our vineyards we make use of so called drip irrigation. This is a type of micro-irrigation system that saves water and nutrients by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants with the goal to place water directly into the root zone and therefore minimize evaporation.

Besides saving water some of the other many environmental advantages of drip irrigation are:

        • Fertilizer and nutrient loss is minimized due to a localized application and reduced leaching.
        • Recycled non-potable water can be safely used.
        • Soil erosion is lessened.
        • Weed growth is lessened.
        • Foliage remains dry, reducing the risk of disease.
        • Usually operated at lower pressure than other types of pressurized irrigation, reducing energy costs.

Recyclable &
Biodegradable

Packaging

The entire estate strives for environmentally conscious principles which of course includes our entire packaging too. When choosing new packaging solutions we make sure they are recyclable, biodegradable and/or compostable. Whenever possible we use water-based varnishes and vegetable oil based inks for our packaging.

Additionally, we do not offer plastic-bottled water but rather decided to use beautifully designed, locally produced, reusable glass water bottles, which can be filled free of charge at the werf fountains on our farm, taken home, and refilled again whenever you return. Leave a lighter footprint.

Reuse. Return. Refill.
