Dating back to 1696

Welcome to Vergenoegd Löw, located just 35 km from Cape Town on Stellenbosch’s Helderberg Wine Route.

Dating back to 1696, this is one of South Africa’s most intact and authentic old wine farms, where beautifully restored heritage buildings tell the story of some remarkable owners over the centuries, from the Colijns of Constantia wine fame (1740-1782) to six generations of Faures (1820-2015).

It is also one of Stellenbosch’s most uniquely situated farms, nestled on an ancient seabed less than five kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. In the Cape Floristic Region, the smallest of the world’s six floral kingdoms, this is where Swartland Shale Renosterveld meets Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, around the wetlands of the Eerste River estuary, making it an area of extraordinarily high biodiversity.

European Heritage Project

In 2015, Vergenoegd was acquired by German lawyer and entrepreneur Peter Löw, founder of investment group LIVIA and chief-curator of the European Heritage Project. Although the estate had fallen into a state of disrepair, he decided to purchase it for two key reasons: its rich heritage and its potential to produce exceptional wines.

Professor Löw set a bold course to achieve excellence, built on four pillars:

  • Heritage — one of the Cape’s oldest, most intact and also most interesting wine farms.
  • Wine — grown in unusually cool conditions, very near the sea, on diverse soils including limestone, anomalous in the Stellenbosch district, resulting in a distinct flavour profile.
  • Sustainability — preserving the rich natural biodiversity of the land while practising regenerative farming to ensure that Vergenoegd Löw thrives for centuries to come.
  • People — a select team chosen for their skills, attention to detail, commitment and above all, passion.

Today, Vergenoegd Löw’s timeless beauty has been restored, along with its proud traditions of winegrowing and hospitality. We invite you to experience it for yourself in our Bertus Basson restaurants, our five-star boutique hotel and spa, and our award-winning wines.
