Michael Olivier, the well known Cape food and wine commentator has visited our estate on numerous occasions and shares his thoughts surrounding Vergenoegd and the harvest lunches….
Vergenoegd, at the gateway to the Stellenbosch Wine Route off the N2, is a busy place. As the estate only grows red wine grapes, the harvest starts a bit later and gives Marlize Jacobs, the winemaker, a chance to get the winery harvest perfect before the new season grapes arrive.
The Vergenoegd Harvest Lunches which started last week have been a huge success with Ryan Shell, Vergenoegd’s Chef producing generous platters for sharing at a long table with the Estate’s wines being poured, iced tea and mineral waters, still and sparkling.
If you get out there early, there is the fabulous parade by the Indian Runner Ducks, going out to work in the vineyards at 09h45.
You can follow this up with a serious game of boules on the variety of courts they have on the Estate between the Manor House and the Cellar under the oaks.
After your harvest lunch there is a formal red wine tasting and blending experience, which is huge fun as you get to blend your own wine using samples from the Vergenoegd Wine Cellar.
This is a wonderful day out in the country, not too far from the city and a great experience for your overseas friends. The Vergenoegd Harvest Lunches are served on Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
