Embracing tradition and innovation: Christiaan Cloete, balances centuries-old heritage with sustainable farming vision

Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s renowned winemaking region, Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate welcomes a new steward to its historic grounds. With a passion ignited in his youth, Christiaan discovered his love for agriculture and winemaking during a transformative visit to a vineyard just before his final year of school. “I was captivated by the sprawling vineyards and the meticulous work that goes into nurturing them,” he recalls fondly. This encounter set the course for his future, leading him to pursue a career deeply rooted in viticulture and sustainable farming practices.

His journey to Vergenoegd Löw was driven by more than just a desire for a career; it was a calling to uphold centuries-old traditions while pioneering new paths in regenerative agriculture. “What attracted me was the rich history going back centuries, coupled with a deep commitment to sustainability and regenerative farming practices,” he explains. This dual commitment to heritage and innovation forms the cornerstone of his vision for the estate.

A typical day for him begins with a strategic meeting with fellow managers, followed by engaging with the dedicated staff who bring the estate to life. His responsibilities span the entire spectrum of farm management – from overseeing vineyards and olive groves to ensuring the welfare of the Dexter cattle and the renowned pest-control team of Indian Runner ducks,. Administrative duties and meetings fill his afternoons, where planning and meticulous attention to detail ensure the estate operates seamlessly.

Managing a wine estate presents its share of challenges, from navigating unpredictable weather patterns to balancing sustainable practices with pest and disease control. Yet, it is precisely these challenges that fuel his dedication. “The most rewarding aspects of estate life for me are observing the small changes throughout the seasons,” he reflects. Each day offers a chance to witness nature’s resilience and the growth of both crops and community.

Looking ahead, Christiaan is eager to integrate innovative techniques into Vergenoegd Löw’s practices, focusing particularly on regenerative agriculture. His approach emphasizes hands-on learning and a commitment to sustainable land management, ensuring that each decision aligns with the estate’s long-term goals.

In the next 5-10 years, his vision for Vergenoegd Löw includes bringing newly planted vines to full production while deepening the estate’s commitment to sustainability. This dedication promises not only exceptional wines but also a legacy of responsible supervision.

Beyond the estate, Christiaan finds inspiration in his love for the outdoors and a thirst for knowledge. “If we take care of nature, nature will take care of us,” he philosophises, summarizing his holistic approach to farming and life.

Reflecting on his journey, he emphasises the importance of respect – for people, nature, and animals alike. “Respect is the key to success,” he concludes, offering a guiding principle that shapes his management style and approach to overcoming challenges.
