Harvest Lunch at Vergenoegd

We enjoyed hosting South African Country Life at one of our recent harvest lunches beneath the plein trees. Greg Landman has shared the experience here….

The historic estate of Vergenoegd, home of the Faure family for six generations, has new owners who are breathing new life into it without changing the patina of the ages which fits it so well.

Famous for its flock of runner ducks who are trotted out to meet visitors, a totally charming sight, Vergenoegd is situated on the Baden Powell drive near the Cape Town Film Studios, an easy drive from town. The ducks are not for eating—they are used to control the snail population on the farm, and look as if they are doing a great job.

The restaurant there is in a state of flux at the moment but new chef Ryan Shell, ex Haute Cabriere, is marking time by serving a wonderful Harvest Lunch which is served on tables under the ancient trees of the estate, and what a feast it is. You will find excellent roast beef, fish, roast potatoes, plenty of veggies, a three course indulgence in the abundance one feel s in summer. It includes wine, made by their winemaker Marelize Jacobs who will be on hand to talk you through the wines she makes.

Ryan is a dab hand at filling hungry bellies and makes sure you don’t go away feeling empty. As a matter of fact one can almost hear the oink oink sounds as each platter arrives at the table.

The lunch is served only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and will run until the end of March.

Bookings are absolutely essential so give them a call and treat yourself. While you are there you can indulge in tea and coffee blending, maybe olive oils—these at extra cost. Lunch cost is R350 a head, including wine, so don’t be backward in coming forward, as my grandmother used to say.

  1. Good Day
I am turning 60 in May and would like to bring +/- 15 friends for breakfast or cake and tea.I would love to combine it with your parade of running ducks. Would it be possible to organize this for Thursday morning,5 May. If so we can discuss a menu and what would be available.
    Thank you
    Celia
